This portfolio is updated regularly. Please come back to view more of my work.
Why don't I include links to my work? Because I usually train my clients to update their own websites, and so I can't take credit for 100% of the work. At handover, I take a snapshot of the website and this is what you see here.
Newall Civil Engineering
Newall Civil Engineering

Project Type: New design
CMS Option: Joomla 1.5
Timeframe: 6 Weeks

The Client
Newall Civil Engineering are civil engineers specialising in public sector works in East Anglia. The company is expanding rapidly and they required a complete overhaul of their dated website as it was beginning to affect their business.

The Brief
The initial brief was very clear. Remake the complete website and fast. The design needed to be clean, professional and on a level to compete with their national rivals.

The Result
Several design options were produced, and eventually Newall settled on the red-cream template, which had a very professional look, and in which it would be easy to highlight specific content. As an expanding business, Newall needed a simple CMS to enable them to keep the website up to date and full of their most recent work and updates. A portfolio section would be important, as it would be a major business generation tool. All these terms were met, and with Joomla as a CMS, the website was ready to go in a matter of weeks. Training was provided to staff to ensure in-house knowledge of the website and it's administrative side was available.

Tambopata Expeditions
Tambopata Expeditions

Project Type: New design
CMS Option: Joomla 1.5
Timeframe: 3 Weeks

The Client
Tambopata Expeditions provide research groups, volunteers and tourists alike the chance to visit the remote regions of the Peruvian Amazon.

The Brief
After some initial briefings over the phone and email, the job was fairly clear - a complete redesign from the static HTML pages into a more modern and graphical template. As the clients spend a fair amount of time completely "out of the office", so to speak, it was also important that the content was dynamic and easy to update.

The Result
The design process for this job was straight forward - Joomla CMS to enable them to manage their own website easily, custom template which was heavy on the gorgeous graphics whilst paying attention to page load times in rural Peru. Tambopata Expeditions also have a large client group with an exceptional amount of good-will towards the company, so it seemed natural to try to generate an online community of past and present clients, who would add to the dynamic nature of the website with forum posts and photographs. The end result, is a beautiful, professional website which far outstrips anything the competitors offer.

The Gathering Gaming Community
Tambopata Expeditions

Project Type: Update & Integrate.
CMS Option: Joomla 1.5.9
Timeframe: 1 month

The Client
The Gathering Clan is an online gaming community which runs a number of gaming leagues, competitions and offers servers for it's membership to use.

The Brief
To update the website into a Joomla 1.5 template and integrate a number of software packages including phpBB3 forums, LGSL gameserver query, and a high level of content syndication with online gaming league websites.

The Result
Getting the look and feel of the website right for the gaming audience was crucial to the success of this project. I worked with the existing graphics team to create the right logo, banners and background images as well as the staff team to bring the existing content into the Joomla CMS. Using Joomla meant that the staff team would be able to delegate certain sections of the website to certain people, and this led to a much better experience for the community members as content was fresh and regularly updated. All the required plugins, software and feeds were installed and enabled successfully, creating an online gaming portal for a very successful online gaming community.

York Enterprise Portal
York Enterprise Portal

Project Type: Update & Create.
CMS Option: Custom CMS
Timeframe: 5 months

The Client
The University of York is one of the UK's top 10 universities, and has an excellent reputation as a centre of excellence in enterprise education and entrepreneurship.

The Brief
To create an Enterprise Portal website to draw together all the various strands of Enterprise work at the University whilst meeting corporate visual identity and strict accessibility guidelines. This involved updating the Enterprise and Innovation Office website, and creating the Student & CETLE websites from scratch.

The Result
The University as a whole was set to move to a new corporate web template, and after some negotiation it was agreed that I could have access to the basic XHTML to produce the enterprise websites. This took away some of the front end work, enabling me to focus more on design and content. The scope of the project in terms of the content was immense. The websites would have a real impact on student interaction with the entire enterprise strand, and the website would also affect the way students and staff worked together. The design was simple but the complex aspect was to integrate so many existing systems into a seamless package. Calendars, Events, Databases you name it, it was included. A custom CMS built on the University Coldfusion and SQL services was created as a management tool.

National Enterprise Events Database
UK National Enterprise Events Database

Project Type: Collaboration.
CMS Option: Custom CMS
Timeframe: 3 months

The Client
The University of York is one of the UK's top 10 universities, and has an excellent reputation as a centre of excellence in enterprise education and entrepreneurship.

The Brief
To create a searchable database of enterprise events to co-exist with the existing University of York enterprise websites. It had to allow external organisations to easily add their own events, and it had to be able to syndicate content from national enterprise organisations and to client websites.

The Result
The design template and database source was coded in collaboration with York Multimedia Network, providing a fast, efficient CMS which enabled users to quickly find events relevant to their requirements. Additionally, users could sign up to be notified of new events, and could even syndicate content from the database for their own websites. I negotiated with national enterprise organisations such as the NCGE and UKSEC and worked with their technical teams to establish incoming RSS feeds to help populate the database. The database was launched to national acclaim from the higher education enterprise community, and was even featured at a prominent US enterprise conference.

The IT Academy
UK National Enterprise Events Database

Project Type: Database integration.
CMS Option: Custom CMS.
Timeframe: 2 weeks.

The Client
The IT Academy is part of the University of York and is an accredited Microsoft IT Academy offering a wide variety of IT software and hardware courses.

The Brief
To update the IT Academy website into an approved web template, and to create and integrate a course, contacts and bookings database.

The Result
As a part of the University of York, the IT Academy was authorised to use the corporate web template, which meant that there was little design work bar the tweaking. This contract revolved around converting their existing MS Access database into an online MYSQL database, and linking it into the website. The database was to run a calendar, a booking form and the list of available courses. The website CMS and Database integration was coded in Coldfusion, and integrated seamlessly with existing web services at the University.
